Torrent Sites Under Fire Febuary 2014: Kickass torrents has .so domain banned and The Pirate Bay is threatened with domain seizure
Kick Ass Torrents and The Pirate Bay, the two biggest torrent sites in the world are under constant attack
The Pirate Bay may have its Swedish domains seized
The pirate bay had its server room raided by Swedish police in December 2014 which caused the site to be shut down for almost two months. They made a triumphant return on January 31st but they are still facing a threat from Swedish authorities who want to seize both of their .se domains, thepiratebay.se and piratebay.se.
Swedish prosecutor Frederick Ingblad alleged the site is running a criminal operation infringing on copyrights and therefore the domains are being used in a crime and should be seized. The original motion to seize the domains was filed in 2013 and will finally be heard by a court in April 2015. If the domains are seized it is likely Pirate Bay will just switch to another domain and continue its operation.
Kickass torrents had its .so domain banned
Kickass.so which formerly operated under kickass.to and kat.ph was forced to switch back to its old domain, kickass.to after having its domain seized. Their .so domain is a Somalian domain and many were surprised that Somalian authorities would ban their domain, but under pressure from international copyright groups they did.
Kickass torrents was down for several hours after the domain seizure. Many users were at first concerned and didn't know what was going on with the site. After a few hours of questions the site had returned to normal operation at its old domain.
It has become evident that domain seizures have little effect on websites as they usually switch to a different domain pretty quickly. No matter how little amount of success they have, copyright groups will continue to attempt any method they can to prevent the sharing of copyrighted files. The two most popular torrent sites in the world, both receiving millions of visitors per day are their prime targets but these sites are likely to continue business as usual no matter what is thrown at them.
Some of the other most popular torrent sites that are being targeted include extratorrent.cc h33t.to rarbg.com 1337x.to and isohunt.to
